Has it really been two-and-a-half years since I set up my LinkedIn profile? How well I recall those days, earnestly inviting contacts from previous jobs and checking my contacts list to see if I’d finally hit double digits.
I sent an invitation to a college friend, who was VP of Technology at a major new- and old-media company (and therefore paid to be aware of things like Web 2.0 while they were still twinkles in our collective eye). When I e-mailed him a few days later to ask what he thought about LinkedIn, he replied, “It’s OK. But I haven’t really seen the benefit.”
Yet.
The term “social networking” wasn’t even on my radar. Now, as you know, it’s everywhere. Our Bulldog HR department uses LinkedIn to check out applicants, and our applicants, presumably, to check out Bulldog. I’ve used it to vet and contact editorial freelancers. Most important, our sales team can use it at various stages of the engagement. And all of this is just basic stuff.
We’re planning several Webinars around the topic, one with our partner Social Media Today—look for updates later in May—and I’m pondering a Top 10 Creative Uses of LinkedIn. Leave a comment and let me know what you’ve got.
